The National Portrait Gallery acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country throughout Australia and recognises the continuing connection to lands, waters and communities. We pay our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and to Elders both past and present.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers are warned that this website contains images of deceased persons.

Copyright and reproductions

We’re committed to supporting the legal and moral rights of artists and respecting the intellectual property rights of others. We recognise the rights of copyright holders under the Copyright Act 1968 (Cth) and acknowledge the cultural and intellectual property rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

USING IMAGES FROM OUR COLLECTION

Depending on each artwork’s copyright clause, we’re usually able to provide a digital copy of them for a number of purposes, including for research, publications, exhibition usage, online usage, film and television, and limited forms of commercial usage.

The only time you can use images from this website without copyright permission is if it’s for research and study as defined by section 40 of the Copyright Act 1968 (Cth). If you need a higher resolution image for this purpose, please submit a reproduction request below.

All other usage of artwork images or other material from our website needs permission from both the copyright owner and us. Where possible, we’ll provide the contact details you’ll need to seek copyright and, where relevant, First Nations cultural and intellectual property permission as part of the reproduction request process.

It is the sole responsibility of the person reproducing the artwork to ensure they have copyright and cultural permissions, and to resolve any associated fees. All permissions and proof of any associated payments must be submitted to us in writing (email is fine) before we can release any image files.

For media image requests please email [email protected]

WHAT ABOUT FOR PRIVATE USE?

We don’t provide artwork files for private use, however, you can buy posters and postcards of selected artworks, publications and other merchandise from The Curatoreum.

HOW TO MAKE A REPRODUCTION REQUEST

Please complete the reproduction request below.

After submitting the online form, your request will be assessed, and then the details of required copyright permissions, fees and other relevant information will be sent to you via email. Once copyright and other permissions are confirmed, we’ll send you a tax invoice and image licence. Once your invoice has been paid, we’ll send you a link to download the digital file/s.

DELIVERY TIMEFRAMES

Our processing time for reproduction requests can vary depending on the permissions required. Initial reproduction requests will be responded to within five working days where possible. Please note that copyright holders and cultural permissions coordinators can take several weeks to reply to your request, so please factor that in to your schedule.

If a reproduction request is urgent please provide a clear date required in the reproduction request, and we’ll let you know if the required supply date is achievable.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SUPPLY

If your reproduction request is approved, we will send you our terms and conditions of supply, the invoice, and any other relevant details. Acceptance of the terms and conditions will be required for the image to be supplied.
